The Tennis Trail — DLF Magnolias, Gurgaon
Date: Cloudy morning session ☁ Start Time: 9:10 AM
🎾 The Session Begins
Under a soft grey sky at DLF Magnolias, I stepped onto one of the three synthetic courts nestled between high-rise buildings. The silence was striking—just the occasional bounce of a ball and the quiet shuffle of the ball boy.
We kicked off with a brisk 15-minute warm-up:
- Groundstrokes (forehand, backhand, backhand slice)
- Volleys (forehand and backhand)
- Overheads (smashes)
- Serves
The rhythm was sharp, the body responsive, but the mind hadn’t quite settled in.
🧠 The Match: A Set of Six Games
The match began with turbulence. I dropped the first three games - 3–0 down, riddled with unforced errors and rushed decisions. My pace was too aggressive, my shots too loose. I felt like I was playing “underdown”—a term I use when I’m not mentally synced with the game.
Then came the pivot. I slowed down.
- Focused on placement over power
- Mixed running shots with timely volleys
- Used backhand slices to disrupt rhythm
The score leveled: 3–3.
From there, I stuck to the same strategy—controlled topspin, slower tempo, and mental clarity. I closed out the set 6–3. Not my cleanest strokes, but a tactical win.
📌 Match Highlights
- Technical drills: groundstrokes, volleys, smashes, slices, serves
- One full set played
- Tactical shift mid-match led to comeback victory
🏟️ The Court Atmosphere
- 3 synthetic courts
- Surrounded by residential towers
- A quiet, focused environment
- Club amenities and a dedicated ball boy
💡 What I Learned
- Pressure is a teacher—every point is a situation to solve
- Mistakes are feedback, not failure
- Progress is continuous, not linear
This session reminded me that tennis isn’t just about strokes—it’s about strategy, self-awareness, and staying grounded when the game gets away from you.
